Pharmacy Systems Specialist - Cerner VA Position Description

We are seeking a Pharmacy Systems Specialist with direct experience supporting pharmacy operations within Cerner (Oracle Health) in a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) setting or Department of Defense (DOD) setting. This position does not require pharmacist licensure, but hands-on pharmacy technician experience is required. The ideal candidate will have deep functional knowledge of Cerner pharmacy modules, including medication management workflows, e-prescribing, formulary design, inventory tracking, and barcode medication administration (BCMA) integration.

The candidate will serve as a subject matter expert to ensure VA pharmacy users are fully supported through implementation, workflow optimization, ticket triage, and training support. They will play a critical role in improving system performance, optimizing clinical and operational workflows, and ensuring medication safety and compliance in support of the Veteran population.

Type of Employment: Full-Time (1099 or W2, negotiable)

Work Location/Travel: Expected 50% travel required; applicants must be free from travel restrictions to accommodate evolving needs of the client.

Salary Range: $72,184 - $84,569 Base pay

Competitive salary/pay, potential for bonus. There are multiple factors that are considered in determining final pay for a position, including, but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and competencies that align to the specified role, geographic location, education and certifications as well as contract provisions regarding labor categories that are specific to the position. The pay range for this position is highly competitive but dependent upon employment type (1099, contract, W2).

Responsibilities
  • Support Cerner pharmacy module implementations and ongoing optimization efforts.
  • Leverage pharmacy or similar experience to align system configurations with clinical workflows.
  • Provide at-the-elbow support and learning.
  • Assist with formulary builds, medication order sets, dosing protocols, and dispensing logic.
  • Coordinate across Cerner teams to validate pharmacy build alignment with VA clinical standards.
  • Identify system issues, triage tickets, and coordinate resolution with technical teams.
  • Provide training and job aids to pharmacy staff, including competency validation.
  • Contribute to data integrity by identifying discrepancies and recommending remediation.
  • Ensure workflows comply with VA policies, safety standards, and medication regulations.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills and present in the most polished and professional manner.
  • Participate in User Acceptance Testing (UAT), workflow reviews, and go-live readiness sessions.
Knowledge and Skills Required
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience working as a pharmacy technician or more advanced role in a clinical setting.
  • At least 5 years of experience with Cerner's pharmacy applications (Millennium PharmNet, RxStation, BCMA).
  • Expertise in solving pharmaceutical-related challenges, understanding the implications to system changes and multi-disciplinary impact.
  • Understanding of back-end build in pharmacy-associated applications.
  • Proven ability to assess medication-related workflows and recommend improvements.
  • Familiarity with medication ordering, dispensing, inventory, and barcode scanning processes.
  • Experience supporting Veterans or vulnerable populations through healthcare systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with attention to detail and patient safety.
Education/Certification Required

High School Diploma or GED required; Associate degree in healthcare or technology preferred.

Current or evidence of previous National Pharmacy Technician Certification (e.g., PTCB) required.

Cerner pharmacy module training or certification highly preferred.

Experience Required

At least 5 years supporting Cerner pharmacy systems, some within a VA or DoD setting.

Demonstrated experience with pre-go-live activities, system go-live support, workflow documentation, and training delivery.

Proven track record of working across clinical and IT teams to resolve application issues and drive process improvements.
