Under limited supervision of the Manager of Coding and CDI, the Inpatient Coding and CDI Supervisor manages, plans, organizes, and evaluates the daily operations and staff of the day-to-day operations of the department. Provides leadership to coding team members by communicating and guiding toward achieving department objectives. Ensures implementation and evaluation of operating policies, procedures, and processes. Monitors coding compliance, develops and implements ongoing education activities for coding staff. Acts as a subject matter expert on inpatient coding, serving as the organization's resource for coding issues and questions.

CCS Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) required Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist (CCDS) or Certified Documentation Integrity Practitioner (CDIP) at start of hire is strongly preferred. Is required to obtain within one year of hire.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Ensures complete, accurate, timely, and consistent coding and DRG/code validation, while adhering to published coding guidelines and organizational policy.
- Abides by national Standards of Ethical Coding as set forth by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), adhering to official coding guidelines.
- Maintains up-to-date knowledge of regulatory changes affecting coding requirements, ensuring staff are appropriately educated.
- Stays abreast of coding, and DRG updates, reference information, such as Coding Clinic, to ensure accurate coding and DRG assignments.
Personnel Management
- Coordinates and maintains work schedules for Clinical Validation Specialists to ensure adequate staffing is in place to meet department metrics for Coding Days and Days in Accounts Receivable (AR), while adhering to personnel budget.
- Monitors productivity and quality of Clinical Validation Specialists, ensuring appropriate follow-up is taking place.
- Oversees staff schedules and assignments. Manages and approves staff time and attendance.
- Orients and trains newly hired Clinical Validation Specialists.
Inpatient Coding & CDI Subject Matter Expert
- Monitors the process of unbilled accounts daily, troubleshooting barriers to timely coding of inpatient accounts.
- Works with Patient Financial Services to resolve problems related to accounts that cannot be billed because of coding and/or medical necessity issues.
- Serves as liaison with other hospital departments and colleagues to research, resolve, and respond to issues related to coding.
- Develops educational materials and presentations for providers regarding documentation improvement.
- Completes review of inpatient admissions to evaluate documentation to assign the principal diagnosis, pertinent secondary diagnoses and procedures for accurate DRG assignment, risk of mortality and severity of illness.
- Queries regarding missing, unclear, or conflicting EHR documentation by requesting and obtaining additional documentation within the EHR when needed.
- Performs clinical validation of all diagnoses, abnormal laboratory data, abnormal radiology reports as well as applying internal clinical criteria to documentation.
- Supports state reporting to the Health Services Cost Review Commission (HSCRC).
- Identifies problems, recommends solutions and courses of action.
Coding Department Leadership
- Assists Manager of Coding and CDI with projects as assigned. Performs other duties as assigned under direction of the Manager of CDI.
- Assumes "Manager" role in Manager of Coding and CDI's absence.
- Assists in developing, recommending, planning, and administration of policies and procedures.
- Compiles various reports for hospital leadership.

Pay Range $77,201.00 - $138,961.82
Final salary offer will be based on the candidate's qualifications, education, experience and alignment with our organizational needs.
