Position: Medical Assistant Department: OB/GYN Clinic Schedule: Part Time, Per Diem POSITION SUMMARY: Performs Medical Office support in both the administrative and clinical areas: In the clinical area the practice assistant, under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse, and in accordance with hospital policies, procedures, protocols, and standards of practice participates in the delivery of patient care. In the administrative area the practice assistant gathers patient information for registration, schedules appointments, verifies demographic and financial information and assists in the facilitation of patient flow throughout the ambulatory setting. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:
Assists with billing on a regular basis Treats patients in a manner that preserves and protects patient autonomy, dignity, confidentiality, and patient rights. Accurately collects requested patient data (e.g. vital signs, weights, and reason for visit today) and complies with department documentation standards to ensure a complete and accurate patient record. Performs basic patient testing, including but not limited to tests for guaiac, sugar and acetone, urine pH, glucose finger stick, O2 saturation, leg/girth measurements, visual acuity tests, peak flow, etc. Collects, labels, and sends/transports specimens with appropriate laboratory slips and or requisitions Delivers care in a non-judgmental, non-discriminatory manner that is sensitive to and demonstrates respect for patient diversity. Intervenes in a manner that preserves and protects patient autonomy, dignity, confidentiality and rights. Follows safety policies and procedures. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age appropriate care to the groups of patients regularly served. Assists nurse/health team members during complex treatments/procedures, including but not limited to, doing preps and setups for examinations/treatments, assisting during procedures. Checks inventories, and restocks, replaces, assembles patient equipment and supplies. Maintains appropriate equipment logs and records. Uses computer terminal for access/input of patient information, lab results, x-ray and other automated requests and communicates findings to appropriate healthcare team members. Performs initial cleaning/decontamination of equipment/materials, e.g., removing reusable equipment from isolation rooms, and arranges for terminal cleaning as appropriate. Secures patients' personal property and belongings according to procedures, including labeling of equipment and supplies. Controls and directs patient flow. Performs other duties as needed. protocols of all confidential or sensitive information
Clerical Support: Under the direction of the Practice Manager or Clinic Coordinator, gathers patient information for registration, schedules appointments, verifies demographic and financial information and assists in the facilitation of patient flow throughout the ambulatory setting.
Interviews patients to obtain all financial and demographic information as required for reimbursement for services rendered. Enters patient registration data into on-line system using PC/Computer terminal according to established procedures to ensure proper reimbursement for services rendered. Verifies third-party insurance coverage for prospective patients and verifies day of service eligibility for appropriate insurances. Verifies and updates demographic, insurance and provider information on all patients at every visit. Assigns medical record numbers to new patients in order to ensure current information on the patient record system. Verifies, using appropriate electronic device, the type of coverage and determines whether prior approval for service is necessary for payment of services rendered. Obtains this approval whenever it is necessary, and enters into the hospital billing system appropriately. Enters charge code and updates diagnosis codes into the patient account system, as directed and as appropriate. Maintains clinic files and patient records; screen patient's chart prior to appointment, checks for lab work, x-ray, and other pertinent results, and verifies information as required. Stamps and dates charts as required; prepare files and other clinic specific forms. Mails out clinic specific notices and letters as required. Handles clinic mail and delivers to the appropriate person. Creates and/or obtains medical records for patients and distributes copy to the appropriate person. Uses computer or paper system to schedule patient appointments, run clinical reports, arrive, no-show, cancel, and reschedule patients on a daily basis. Creates cross-booking activities for both linked appointments (social services, nutrition, interpreters, etc.) Reschedules patients from canceled or bumped clinic sessions. Prepares incoming medical paperwork for Grid Fulfill medical record requests for insurance companies, patients or other medical practices. Obtains authorizations for radiology exams from insurance companies Prepare encounter forms Makes ancillary appointments for patients Perform other duties as needed.

- Minimum of HS diploma/GED plus Certificate in Medical Assisting.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:
- Medical Assistant Degree or Certification
EXPERIENCE:
- Experienced assistants preferred but will train on the job
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Must have EKG/Phlebotomy and clinical skills from training at an accredited school. Good communications skills in English. Additional language skills is a plus. Basic computer proficiency inclusive of ability to access, enter, and interpret computerized data/information. Be able to maintain strict protocols of all confidential or sensitive information.
