The Section Chief responsibilities and performance expectations are set forth in the following categories:

Annual goals and deliverables will be developed with the Department Chief and/or Division Chief, and success of the Section Chief will be predicated on goal attainment.
The position includes approximately 90% to 95% clinical care and 5% to 10% administrative work.
The position includes the obligation to serve on one committee of the Group, Department or Division if requested by the Department Chief
  • Leadership

  • Growth

    Achieve focused growth of the Practice in alignment with the Medical Group strategic plan
    * Establish & achieve annual volume targets in respect to encounters, wRVUs, and new patient visits, as well as other growth and access targets that may be established
    * Ensure that barriers to physician and mid-level practitioner and employee productivity are minimized
    * Collaborates with executive leadership to plan, design, develop and implement strategic and annual facilities plans

    Strategic Planning and Implementation, including Recruitment
    * Participate in development of an annually updated Department strategic plan. This plan should describe enhanced program reputation and growth, and unique, innovative approaches to the achievement of superior quality, service, safety and financial outcomes.
    * Participate in the development of a plan for adequate resources to achieve the short term and long term strategic goals and objectives of the Department/program, including growth and new program development.
    * As appropriate, develop research goals and implementation plan including integration with clinical initiatives
    * Participates in development of orientation for new physicians
    * Participates in the orientation for new physicians of the Division and Clinical Site
    * Contributes to the development of current Physicians
  • Quality, Safety and Clinical Innovation

    * Ensure that those within your section meet federal and state regulatory requirements, as well as accreditation standards
    * Ensure that those within your section meet all payer contract requirements in respect to quality incentives and obligations
    * Ensure that those within your section evaluate and improve the performance of its professional staff and care teams compared to current standards of care of the community and of the professional societies
    * Ensure that those within your section develop and sustain a culture of safety, and establishes safety as an system property
    * Plan, develop and implement the section annual plan for Quality, Safety and Clinical Innovation, in support of the Medical Group's annual plan
    * Lead the implementation of initiatives in evidence-based medicine and the incorporation of the methods of safety science into patient care practices, engaging all staff, especially physicians, APP's and nurses
  • Development of People

    * In collaboration with the Department and Division Chief, develop and implement a plan for physician leadership development
    * Implement a formal periodic performance evaluation of the section's professional staff
    * In collaboration with the Finance Committee of the Board and its subcommittees, and with the Department and Division Chiefs, ensure equitable annual compensation of section members in their fulfillment of the clinical, administrative, teaching and research missions
    * Collaborate with the Department Chief and Academic Chair in the management of physician and APP performance to ensure individual physician productivity, clinical quality, positive patient perception, appropriate resource utilization, adherence to the group's ethical and legal standards, appropriate relationship with colleagues and staff, and (as appropriate) involvement in teaching and research activities.
  • Patient Service and Perception of Care

    * Ensure the section adopt robust measurements of patients' perception of care and services, in alignment with the Medical Group, and that the section achieves annual performance goals for patients' perception of care
  • Finance

    * In collaboration with the Board and the executive team, establish the five year forecast, and annual plan of financial performance goals of the section.
    * Achieve the five year forecast and annual plan goals of the section through expense management and optimum revenue cycle management.
    * In collaboration with the Finance Committee, ensure optimum management of compliance and risk for all section members.
  • Academic and Faculty Affairs

    If requested by the Academic Chair of the Department,
    * Ensures an appropriate clinical learning environment for the training of medical students, residents, or fellows
    * Participates in, or supports the participation of the section's professional staff in, faculty development programs of the Department or the MSU College of Human Medicine.

Qualifications

  • Required Doctorate

  • At least four years of experience in a medical group setting, medical administration, with knowledge of medical business practices, organization dynamics and a desire for greater influence in the building of a multi-specialty group practice required

  • LIC-Physician (MD) - STATE_MI State of Michigan required or

  • LIC-Osteopathic Physician (DO) - STATE_MI State of Michigan required

  • CRT-Basic Life Support (BLS) - AHA American Heart Association required or

  • CRT-Basic Life Support (BLS) - ARC American Red Cross required
