POSITION SPECIFICS

The Ecosystem Science and Management (ESM) Department seeks an Academic Adviser for our Environmental Resource Management (ERM) undergraduate program. We are interested in someone who is passionate about advising students so they can reach their academic and professional potential. Advising responsibilities for our ERM undergraduate program include three options in the major, a minor and an Agricultural Stewardship and Conservation Certificate. Advisers in ESM work with a variety of students including students who begin their academic careers at various Penn State locations and students who transfer from other institutions.

The primary responsibilities of the Academic Adviser include (but are not limited to):

  • Advising a roster of 150+ students in the ERM program.

  • Participating enthusiastically in a variety of recruiting events that help draw high-quality and diverse students to our major such as meetings with potential students, Spend a Summer Day and The Pennsylvania School for Excellence in the Agricultural Sciences (PSEAS).

  • Provide administrative support to the ERM Undergraduate Coordinator to reserve classrooms, schedule and coordinate events, maintain program curriculum records and prepare scholarship award forms.

  • Serve as a contact for maintaining student records and advising rosters, create and process degree audit petitions through the Course Substitution Request System (CSRS) and assist with graduation approvals with the major, minor and certificate.

  • Work with program faculty members to coordinate internships and externships for undergraduate students.

  • Create and maintain list serves for distribution, update websites, create and maintain social media presence for the program.

  • Working with the Academic Advising Coordinator, Undergraduate Program Coordinators, Faculty and Staff to maintain the department's undergraduate programs.

ESM has thriving undergraduate programs that train students to be future leaders in natural resource management. We are looking for an energetic and creative advisor who is dedicated to helping students have successful and relevant experience at Penn State and preparing students for professional success.

We seek candidates with experience and skills in the following areas:

  • Undergraduate academic advising.

  • Working in teams to accomplish goals and responsibilities while maintaining an accessible and inclusive environment.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Experience in fostering student engagement.

  • Managing diverse and numerous job responsibilities and tasks.

  • Familiarity with or ability to learn Penn State-specific programs, including LionPATH, Starfish, Canvas, Slate.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE & REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS

Master's Degree 1+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience accepted Required Certifications: None

Preference will be given to those with degrees in forestry, wildlife, fisheries, soils, ecology, or natural resource management.

SALARY & BENEFITS

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades, is $42,100.00 - $61,000.00.
