(Temporary) Maintenance Assistant

The North Carolina Arboretum is seeking a dependable and hardworking Temporary Maintenance Assistant to support its operations. The pay range for the position is $16.00-$20.00 per hour depending on experience. This role provides essential assistance in maintaining the Arboretum's facilities and grounds, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for guests, staff, and volunteers. Ideal candidates are detail-oriented, reliable, and enjoy working outdoors. This position will perform routine maintenance and construction activities as necessary to keep the structures, buildings, mechanical and electrical systems in good working order. The position will use trade skills including general building maintenance, steel fabrication, plumbing, carpentry, electrical, sheet metal, roofing, painting and HVAC.

This position will work Tuesday-Saturday; 8 hours per day. This position is considered 'temporary' under the State of North Carolina policies and may only work 11 out of 12 months each year.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assess, repair and/or replace common facility related items such as: doors, windows, trim, flooring, window treatments, minor electrical devices and other building related items.
  • Perform general construction activities including framing, drywall, taping, floating, finishing and painting.
  • Small concrete and masonry repairs, including excavation, forming, reinforcing, placing and finishing.
  • Minor plumbing repairs of fixtures, fittings and accessories.
  • Install, remove, repair, modify or replace new or existing equipment.
  • Set up and operate small hand and power tools such as drills, saws, grinders, etc.
  • Operate customary construction equipment such as scissor/boom lifts, forklifts, mini excavators, etc.
  • Perform housekeeping functions to maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Establish and maintain inventory of construction related supplies and materials.
  • Ensure that all assigned scheduled preventive maintenance tasks are completed.
  • Determine estimates of costs for materials and labor associated with projects.
  • Maintain excellent team working relationships.
  • Perform other duties as assigned



Physical Requirements:

Must be able to climb and work from ladder. Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 25 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Tasks can require standing for long periods of time, kneeling, squatting, bending, and the ability to work on slick or uneven surfaces. Work may require strenuous physical exertion and working in all weather conditions.

Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit

The Facilities unit of The North Carolina Arboretum is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the 434-acre campus to meet the needs of employees and visitors. The duties of the unit include both strategic planning and day-to-day operations with particular emphasis on buildings and premises. Facilities is responsible for building and basic grounds maintenance, cleaning, vending, health and safety, and set up and break down of event space management.

Minimum Education, Experience, and Skills

High School education or equivalent and one (1) year of progressive experience in the trade(s) areas related to the areas listed.

Preferred Education, Experience, and Skills

Forklift Certification, experience with scissor or boom lift operations.

Competencies

Broad knowledge of construction related items such as: Carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, concrete and electrical. Demonstrated experience with general maintenance, including routine repairs. Ability to read and interpret documents such as blueprints, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedures manuals * Ability to interpret technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form. Ability to understand and follow work orders, instructions, product directions and other written job materials and understand verbal instructions. Shows initiative to perform duties beyond assignment specific duties Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing Ability to work independently Must be able to work safely and properly use all personal protective equipment (PPE) as required by regulations and job requirements.
