What You Do.



  • Assumes a leadership role within Supplier Quality and acts as a technical resource for raw materials, and/or External Warehouses.
  • Interprets food safety and quality standards to key personnel in organization and to suppliers.
  • Represents Food Safety & Quality on projects. Assumes a leadership role within Supplier Quality and acts as a technical resource. Function as SME for product category, in conjunction with R&D, Legal, Strategic Sourcing & Procurement, Food Safety, and other relevant departments.
  • Establishes and maintains internal and external relationships within the food safety and quality and community.
  • Supports the selection, qualification, and approval of Suppliers/Co-Packers/Warehouses by partnering with Strategic Sourcing & Procurement, R&D, Manufacturing, Food Safety & Quality, and Legal.
  • Lead and access supplier capabilities through direct visits, technical discussions, capability studies, and audits.
  • Lead and access supplier food safety plans and completes supplier and material risk assessments to assure food safety.
  • Drives and monitors first production runs at Suppliers for food safety, product appearance, functionality, performance, and adherence to Sargento Foods Inc. specifications working with R&D.
  • Reviews Supplier Quality Evaluations, third-party audits and conducts Food Safety Audits to determines supplier approval status.
  • Review supplier supporting documents and records, in accordance with Food Safety & Quality document control procedures. Analyzes data to ensure the materials meet or exceed Sargento Foods Inc. food safety and quality standards throughout shelf-life. Works with suppliers to establish specification requirements. Provides information to create raw material/Co-Pack finished good specifications. Works with suppliers and R&D to establish specification requirements.
  • Coordinates the raw material risk and vulnerability assessment process, including evaluating the material for microbiological, chemical, and physical hazards. Conducts ready-to-eat assessments on raw materials/Co-Pack finished goods.
  • Develops and implements inspection criteria, procedures, plans, and sampling for raw materials/Co-Pack Finished Goods.
  • Leads or supports nonconformance process, working closely with Supply Chain. Communicates quality and food safety issues to suppliers. Provides assistance to develop corrective and preventive actions. Investigates and responds to customer complaints and/or consumer complaints.
  • Applies quality management tools and approaches to continuous improvement projects. Develops and analyzes statistical data and product specifications to determine present standards and establishes proposed quality and reliability expectancy of Suppliers.
  • Drives and participates with Strategic Sourcing & Procurement in supplier performance reviews.
  • Investigates and responds to customer complaints that are the direct result of suppliers or inquires related to needing supplier information.
  • Works with customers in establishing specifications, reviewing supplier agreements, and resolving quality concerns.
  • Work with Food Safety to monitor and address supplier recalls and notices of adulteration.
  • Maintains or supports Supplier Proficiency Testing Program. Assures laboratory data accuracy through maintenance of the Laboratory Quality System at our suppliers.
  • Explores, identifies, and defines improvement areas in order to improve food safety and quality.
  • Supports strategic initiatives to reduce total cost.
  • Designs and implements food safety and quality training programs for key personnel in conjunction with other department managers.
  • Develops and manages annual budget for the department.
  • Directly supervises 1-5 employees in the Supplier Quality Department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Manager or department head.

  • Must have valid driver's license. Requires up to 50% travel.




Your Education and Experience.



  • Bachelor's degree in Food Science, Quality, Math or other Science related field plus 5 years relevant, decision-making experience required.
  • Food safety and quality management experience preferred.
  • Auditing experience preferred.

  • Expected to have or obtain Preventive Control Qualified Individual Certification within 1 year of accepting the position. Certified Quality Auditor (CQA), Certified HACCP Auditor (CHA), Certified Food Safety & Quality Auditor (CFSQA) or equivalent and HACCP certification is preferred. Recommend obtaining and maintaining an ASQ Certified Supplier Quality Professional (CSQP) or Certified Manager of Quality and Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE).
