Overview:

We are seeking a Mechanical Designer who will focus on producing designs, and engineering drawings using computer-aided design (SolidWorks/AutoCAD) packages for modifications to reactor systems, support systems, cryogenic cold source systems, and provides technical support for related maintenance activities.

This position resides in the Systems Engineering Group in the Research Reactors Division, Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The Systems Engineering Group is responsible for the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) configuration management program, provides technical support to operations and maintenance, and performs systems analysis.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Creates new designs and revises designs for reactor components, tooling, and related equipment.

  • Prepares engineering drawings using SolidWorks and AutoCAD.

  • Identifies and resolves model design, and interface problems with system engineers.

  • Assists Design Basis Group lead with group level tasks.

  • Produces multi-system, multi-discipline installation drawings and specifications.

  • Prepares clear, complete, and accurate working plans and detail drawings from layouts, rough or detailed sketches, electronic databases, or written or verbal instructions.

  • Meets milestones set by RRD management e.g. budget and schedule.

  • Works with Design Basis Group lead to ensure accurate, timely, and professional designs and drawings.

  • Ensures compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements including ISMS.

Basic Qualifications:

  • An AS degree in an engineering related field with a minimum of 5 years of experience in mechanical design and engineering.

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered (a high school diploma with a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience or a bachelor's degree in an engineering related field).

  • Proficiency in SolidWorks.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with ASME Y-14.5 Dimensioning & Tolerancing standards.

  • Demonstrated ability to create and complete design packages which have resulted in successful product launches.

  • Excellent problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, with the ability to identify and resolve design challenges.

  • Effective interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate within multidisciplinary teams.

  • Awareness of various manufacturing techniques and their associated tolerance capabilities/limitations.

Special Requirements:

  • This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.

  • Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
