JOB DESCRIPTION:



  • Participate in the administration of certain company intellectual property (IP) assets in the United States.
  • Coordinate patent prosecution projects related to medical devices, industrial and automotive components, semiconductors, fine ceramics, electronic components, and related technologies.
  • Work with engineers in the U.S. to harvest inventions, review invention disclosures, and determine patent filing priorities.
  • Oversee the preparation, processing, and prosecution of patent applications, working with outside counsel, internal patent attorneys, and inventors.
  • Conduct prior art searches and analyses to draft patent claims and enhance patent prosecution and to assess freedom to operate for new products.
  • Conduct patent research services such as landscape analyses to assist business units, affiliated companies, and Kyocera Corporation to develop new products, understand competitive risks, and find new customers.
  • Work with the company's marketing teams to utilize IP for marketing and for tradeshows such as Medical Design and Manufacturing West.
  • Act as a liaison with Kyocera Corporation in Japan on global IP initiatives.
  • Work in a department responsible for the company's U.S. strategic directions/initiatives for its IP, and for protecting and enhancing the value of such IP to strengthen the company's business position globally.


Qualifications:



  1. Master's degree or equivalent in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  2. Two years of experience in intellectual property management.
  3. Employer will accept a Bachelor's or equivalent in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field and four years of experience in intellectual property management in lieu of a Master's degree and two years of experience.
  4. Work experience to include: (1) Two years of experience (or four years if qualifying with a Bachelor's degree) in patent prosecution, patent portfolio development, and patent research. (2) Portfolio administration. (3) Drafting patent applications, drafting responses to official communications, and interviewing examiners. (4) Performing patent analyses (including infringement, clearance, patentability, and validity analyses) and patent landscape analyses for competitive purposes. (5) Collaborating with counsel in the U.S. and Japan regarding compliance with local practices and laws. (6) Participating in design-around analysis and performing due diligence analysis for potential acquisitions and investments.
  5. Any and all experience may be gained concurrently.
  6. Position requires fluency in oral and written Japanese.
  7. Applicants must have Registration or Limited Recognition with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (authorized to prosecute patent applications before the USPTO).
  8. Applicants must be a benrishi () (a Japanese legal professional specifically licensed to practice intellectual property law).
  9. 40 hours/week.
  10. Salary: $228,758 to $228,758 per year.
