About the Department:
The Antonin Scalia Law School is a small law school, with a student body of only about 500. Our student/faculty ratio of 4.5:1 is one of the lowest of any law school in the United States. This provides students with direct and personalized interaction with professors - an invaluable advantage when learning complex legal doctrines. Although still a relatively young law school, Scalia Law has risen very quickly in several prestigious rankings. We have been a top 50 school for the past 20 consecutive years, ranked 31st in the most recent U.S. News ranking.
About the Position:
The Admissions Counselor plays a crucial role in enhancing Scalia Law's student body by supporting the recruitment initiatives for prospective and admitted students. This position is responsible for processing all applications and notifying applicants. The Admissions Counselor collaborates on recruitment outreach efforts, which includes assisting the Associate Dean for Admissions with virtual events for admitted students. Additionally, the Admissions Counselor helps with the JD Admissions application process, which involves reviewing applications. This position reports to the Associate Director of JD Admissions with a dotted line reporting to the Associate Dean for Admissions and Enrollment Management.
The Admissions Counselor is expected to travel on occasion.
Responsibilities:
Processing Applications:
- Manages the entire application processing lifecycle, from application creation to enrollment, in order to achieve important admissions objectives;
- Processes all applications from submission to decision or matriculation while maintaining accurate records of both applications and admissions decisions;
- Monitors the status of applicants and ensures all required application documentation is received by the established deadlines;
- Oversees a centralized inbox and communicates with applicants regarding the status of their applications;
- Manages and executes the admissions decision process, which includes mailing decision letters, scholarship notifications, and sending decision emails;
- Maintains UNITE and Banner systems; and
- Performs application and UNITE special projects assigned by the Associate Dean for Admissions and Enrollment Management
Recruitment:
- Serves as a point of contact for prospective students and applicants throughout the enrollment process in a respectful, courteous, and timely manner, utilizing a variety of communication methods;
- Represents Scalia Law by attending local and state-wide recruitment events;
- Hosts weekly admissions counselor phone calls and bi-weekly information sessions for prospective students;
- Assists the Associate Dean for Admissions and Enrollment Management with virtual events for admitted students, to include creating emails, providing Zoom links, and updating the intranet for admitted students;
- Assists with planning and execution of annual recruitment programming for open houses, workshops, and live tours; and
- Corresponds promptly and professionally with guests.
Purchasing and Orientation:
- Purchases office supplies and materials for orientation events and the Admissions office;
- Handles the majority of eVa items related to orientation, admissions day to day, and other admissions events; and
- Assists with administration of the Mason Mentor program, to include tracking mentor hours, monitoring outreach to admitted students, updating emails, and the intranet for admitted students.
Reading and Selection:
- Reviews applications and makes decisions for the Scalia Law School. Reviews up to 25 to 50 applications per week;
- Performs applicant interviews and provides interview notes; and
- Performs other duties related to the position as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience;
- Experience in higher education admissions, student recruitment, and/or enrollment management;
- Experience using Microsoft Office suite and computer databases;
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written;
- Demonstrated organizational skills;
- Advance skill in the use of Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and computer databases;
- Demonstrated ability to exercise substantial attention to detail;
- Ability to independently manage and complete work assignments without close supervision;
- Ability to work flexible hours as needed;
- Functional understanding of database management systems and email-based communication to support recruitment strategies;
- Customer service-orientated attitude;
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment; and
- Must currently possess an appropriate, active, valid motor vehicle operator's license that meets all of GMU's requirements for operating state vehicles and equipment under Mason's Vehicle Use Policy 1411 https://universitypolicy.gmu.edu/policies/vehicle-use/. The Office of Risk Management reserves the right to review the driver's licenses and Motor Vehicle Reports (MVRs) of all candidates selected with employment contingent upon a favorable review.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in related field;
- Experience with law school admissions, student recruitment, and/or enrollment management;
- Experience with ACES2, UNITE, or Banner;
- Experience with data entry;
- Detailed knowledge of and ability to implement University and Law School admissions standards, policies, and procedures; and
- Demonstrated ability to use appropriate discretion when dealing with sensitive information and situations with advanced skill in working independently and following through on assignments with accuracy and minimum direction.
