The University of Virginia's College at Wise invites applicants to apply for an Academic Advisor position. The Academic Advisor manages a caseload of advisees, provides academic advising and individualized coaching, and teaches freshman seminar. Duties also include assisting with early identification of participants, planning workshops, and promoting graduate and professional school enrollment. A Bachelor's degree is required; a Master's degree in an academic discipline, student personnel, higher education, or counseling is preferred as well as two years of relevant experience. Strong academic preparation along with effective communication, organizational, and computer literacy skills are necessary. This is a 12-month university staff position. Responsibilities: Academic advising and individualized coaching Help with course selection and individualized academic and career coaching for a caseload of participants. Create and maintain an academic plan for each advisee and provide or refer advisees to appropriate services as needed. Coordinate mentoring program Oversee the student mentoring program, which includes training, supervising, and evaluating student mentors. Planning and coordination of workshops Assist with the planning and coordination of activities and workshops on study skills, financial literacy, financial aid/assistance with the FAFSA, applying to graduate and professional school, and other topics. Teach freshman seminar Develop a curriculum for and teach a year-long SSS section of freshman seminar. Early identification and selection of participants Assist with the early identification and selection of new participants. Participate in the Orientation programs. Lead first generation initiatives Collaborate with College partners on first gen initiatives and programming to support FG students. Record keeping Create and maintain advisee files and contact logs. Complete time and effort reports and assist with project evaluation of services.
