Overview

NaphCare is hiring a Substance Abuse Counselor with Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) experience to join our team of medical professionals in the Middlesex County Jail in North Brunswick, New Jersey.

As a Correctional Substance Abuse Counselor, you will work alongside correctional officers and other medical professionals to provide support to the patients within the facility struggling with substance abuse. This is a unique position where you can make a difference to this diverse population of patients with complex needs.



Responsibilities

The Correctional Substance Abuse Counselor is responsible for providing counseling, support, and guidance to help patients understand their addiction, develop coping skills, and work towards recovery, while preparing them for a healthier, substance-free life after release. Additional responsibilities may include and not be limited to:

    Conducting comprehensive assessments to understand the patient's substance abuse history, severity, and related issues
  • Conduct weekly group substance abuse counseling sessions for patients with Substance Use Disorder (SUD) and Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) Program
  • Providing education about addiction, recovery, and the dangers of substance abuse
  • Maintaining accurate and detailed records of client progress and treatment plan
  • Working collaboratively with correctional staff and other professionals to ensure a safe and supportive environment for patients
  • Creating individualized treatment plans that address the patient's specific needs, goals, and progress
  • Helping patients develop a comprehensive aftercare plan to ensure they have the support they need upon release from the facility


Qualifications

Education / Licenses / Certifications / Requirements

  • Master's Degree preferred; or Bachelor's degree in psychology, social work, public policy, social science, or related field
  • Valid CPR card
  • Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC) or Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LCADC)
  • Must pass the facility's criminal background check and drug screening

Experience / Skills

  • Strong communication, empathy, active listening, and knowledge of addiction treatment principles and techniques.
  • Understanding the nature of addiction, its causes, and the different types of substances used is essential.
  • Requires knowledge of the treatment modalities such as Methadone, Suboxone, Sublocade, and Vivitrol medications.
  • Counselors need to be skilled at conducting assessments and developing personalized treatment plans, analyze data and solve problems independently.
  • Able to handle crises and provide immediate support is critical
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of all proprietary and/or confidential information
  • Excellent communication skills are essential for interacting with patients, other medical and correctional staff and ability to work independently and in a team
  • Integrity, professionalism and ability to adhere to a Code of Conduct and comply with all facility(s) correctional healthcare policies, procedures, and legal requirements

Physical Capabilities:

Must have the ability to stand for long periods, lift and move patients (up to 50 pounds), bend, squat, reach, push, pull, walk significant distances, and perform physically demanding tasks like CPR, all while maintaining good balance and endurance throughout a shift.
