ACTIVITES COORDINATOR

Full-Time position with Comprehensive Benefits, Generous Paid Time Off, and Competitive Pay

Located in South Central Virginia, The Hughes Center is a highly-structured psychiatric residential treatment facility for youth ages 10 to 22 with neurodevelopmental disorders. The Hughes Center also provides private, community-based educational services. We provide both individualized and holistic care for adolescents and young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in a nurturing, family-friendly environment. We utilize a multidisciplinary team approach to provide comprehensive evaluations and evidence-based treatment (and educational) interventions with the intent to increase each youth's level of functional independence. Our team also works diligently to address or manage medical conditions and challenging behaviors that are often associated with individuals who are diagnosed with neurodevelopmental disorders. We challenge our residents to adapt to and apply learned skills within new environments and situations, and to maintain functional use of these skills when they return to their homes or other community-based settings.

Job Description & Essential Duties:

  • Works with the Clinical Department to ensure that The Hughes Center's residents have a quality and comprehensive Resident Activities and Recreation Program 24/7
  • Assists with the creation, implementation, coordination, and dissemination of all related resident activities and related communication
  • Plans and coordinates all resident outings, on and off campus events, and activities including for Holidays, school integration days, and non-school days
  • Ensures the resident activities calendar, activity notifications, and special events are effectively communicated
  • Assists staff and provides support to employees by introducing and educating staff to activities
  • Assists, demonstrates, teaches, and instructs activities to residents
  • Effectively inventories all activities and recreation equipment and ensures items are kept in working condition and/or replaces such items when deemed necessary through the departmental purchase request procedures
  • Understands and maintains budget for therapeutic activities
  • Provides resident ratio coverage in emergency or high-need situations
  • Provide direct supervision and care for intellectually disabled adolescents in a residential setting
  • Provide positive and appropriate intervention, limit-setting, response, problem-solving, and guidance when needed
  • Provide effective, accurate, and legible documentation
  • Demonstrate knowledge, understanding, and follow-thru with resident treatment plans and interventions
  • Respond to children in a caring, mature manner while demonstrating sound professional boundaries with both residents and staff

The Activities Coordinator will assist in the direct care and management of children, adolescents, and young adult residents as prescribed by the physician and treatment team. They will provide supervision, safety, and crisis management for the resident population, as well as complete documentation of resident behavior and participation in programming. The selected candidate will adhere to scheduled activities, role model positive & mature behaviors, and utilize positive behavioral strategies to minimize resident crisis and maximize success. This position may also require personal care support for individuals with enhanced needs, particularly in the domain of their Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), which may include, but is not limited to bathing, toileting, clothing, feeding, etc. the individuals that they are assigned to.


Qualifications

Position Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor's Degree in Recreation Therapy or related field
  • Two (2) years experience in a psychiatric setting with adolescents and children
  • Must be at least 21 years of age at time of hire
  • Hold a valid driver's license with a good driving record
  • Working knowledge of activities scheduling and/or recreational therapy programming

Other Requirements:

  • Able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds,
  • Effectively use the full range of body motion - sit, bend, kneel or stand for more than an hour if needed.
  • Reflect behavior, attitude, and appearance appropriate to the position and be supportive of the facility and division philosophy, goals, and objectives
  • Successfully complete and pass all components of Handle With Care & Verbal De-escalation Crisis Intervention Training,
  • Effectively perform facility approved First Aid and CPR techniques
  • Able to understand and demonstrate therapeutic boundaries
  • Willing to be a team player and offer valuable insight to the team
  • Able to effectively communicate both verbally and via written documentation
  • Able to rotate shifts and units as necessary

Pay is Hourly (bi-weekly) and is commensurate with education and experience.
