Mary Free Bed is a not-for-profit, nationally accredited rehabilitation hospital serving thousands of children and adults each year through inpatient, outpatient, sub-acute rehabilitation, orthotics and prosthetics and home and community programs. Mary Free Bed Guild is a not-for-profit organization and largest shareholder of the hospital. The Guild was founded in 1891, opened the Children's Convalescent Home in 1930 and began serving both adults and children's rehabilitation needs in 1953. The Guild remains a partner of the hospital and the community to support the empowerment and well-being of people with disabilities.

Position Summary

The Executive Director (ED) will work with the Guild Board of Directors to implement the strategic direction and will execute it with Guild members and MFB staff and provide a visionary mindset to move the organization forward. The ED will be responsible for overseeing all operations, programs, and initiatives while fostering relationships with Guild members, MFB leadership and staff and the broader community. The ideal candidate will have a passion for rehabilitation, a commitment to helping individuals with disabilities, and the ability to connect with and motivate Guild members.

Essential Job Responsibilities

Leadership and Strategy:

  • Implement strategic plans to achieve the Guild's mission and goals.
  • Continue the culture of collaboration, inclusivity, and excellence among Guild membership and MFB staff and leadership.
  • Partner with Guild administrator to meet the operational needs of the Guild.
  • Organizing, planning and prioritizing work. Developing specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize and accomplish work.
  • Thinking creatively to develop, design or create new applications, ideas, relationships or systems.

Membership Engagement:

  • Build and maintain relationships with both Guild and hospital leadership.
  • Organize workshops and training sessions to enhance member capabilities and knowledge.
  • Assist with recruiting new members with a focus on implementing the Guild's strategic initiatives for developing membership.
  • Lead efforts to engage and welcome members to actively participate in Guild committees, events, educational offerings and other opportunities that support the Guild's mission.

Financial Management:

  • Oversee the Guild's financial health, including budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting.
  • Partner with MFB Foundation and MFB leadership to align funding strategies for hospital programs, community events, donations and sponsorships.
  • Ensure compliance with financial and legal regulations and nonprofit best practices.
  • Monitoring and controlling resources and overseeing the spending of money in collaboration with Guild Leadership and the Mary Free Bed Hospital Finance Team.

Program Development:

  • Design and implement programs that support member engagement, including but not limited to nonprofit administration best practices and public relations.
  • Evaluate and assess the effectiveness of the Guild's activities to ensure alignment with organizational goals and member engagement.

Advocacy and Outreach:

  • Serve as a spokesperson for the organization, representing its interests across the MFB system.
  • Communicating with people outside the organization, representing the organization to customers, the public, government and other external resources.

Human Resources:

  • Providing guidance and direction to subordinates, including setting performance standards and monitoring performance.
  • Developing and building teams. Encouraging and building mutual trust, respect and cooperation among team members, including but not limited to hospital, guild, colleagues and community partners.

Essential Job Qualifications

  • Minimum of five years in a leadership role in the nonprofit sector or health care.
  • Demonstrated ability to build collaboration and consensus.
  • Proven track record in financial management, and strategic planning.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and motivate diverse interest holders.
  • A community connector with a high emotional intelligence (EQ) and empathy.
  • Strong writing, speaking, and analytical skills.
