The Oak Ridge National Laboratory has an opening for a Millwright. In this role, you will, under limited supervision, install, maintain, repair, and troubleshoot stationary machinery and mechanical equipment.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Fit bearings, align gears and shafts, attach motors, and connect couplings and belts on machinery.

  • Align, assemble, and secure machinery to foundations; Test equipment and make adjustments as necessary.

  • Initiate operating scenarios and observe mechanical components to ensure smooth operation; adjust clearances and align moving parts as needed.

  • Perform preventative and operational maintenance; repair, oil, and maintain machinery and equipment.

  • Repair and replace defective parts when necessary.

  • Fabricate foundations for machines and other fabrication projects as required.

  • Dismantle machines and move machinery and equipment.

  • Attend training for site access, safety, certifications, and new technologies/techniques as well as attend meetings as necessary.

  • Determine appropriate risk associated with inspections and document defects and appropriate corrective actions or preventative actions.

  • Determine materials, tools, and personal protective equipment (PPE) needed for job at hand.

  • Collect and calibrate materials, tools, and PPE.

  • Establish if more extensive inspection, examination, or testing is warranted.

  • Maintain required certifications and complete required documentation.

  • Examine equipment and machinery to identify irregularities and malfunctions.

  • Evaluate area hazards by adequately documenting and addressing hazards; advise management whether continued operation of equipment could be hazardous.

  • Participate in pre-job briefings.

  • Maintain Quality Program specific to repairs, alterations, and Federal Inspection Agency (FIA).

  • Other tasks as assigned by management.

Basic (or Required) Qualifications:

  • A high school diploma or GED.

  • A minimum of five years of industrial millwright experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Completion of a Millwright apprenticeship program or an Associate's degree in related mechanical field.

  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses repair and maintenance.

  • Optical laser alignment experience.

  • Knowledge of robotics or mechanical assembly power transmission via aircraft cable or metal tape.

  • Knowledge in maintenance of and the proper installation/replacement of rolling element bearings, single and double mechanical seals, shaft couplings, and rotating shaft assemblies as well as general rotating equipment of all types.

  • Knowledge of maintenance equipment and tools to include measuring tools such as inside/outside micrometers, depth gauges, etc. for alignment.

  • Ability to construct, assemble, repair, and dismantle machinery and equipment using tools such as: hammers, wrenches, crowbars, rollers, dollies, hoists, and other hand tools.

  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations as well as read and interpret code requirements.

  • Ability to respond to changing business needs and priorities also establish and maintain effective working relationships.

  • Ability to understand schematic diagrams, blueprints, sketches, building plans, and other specifications.

  • Ability to detect hazards and violations and recommend corrective measures.

  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing as well as remain calm, objective and impartial under stressful conditions.

Special Requirements:

  • Physical Requirements:Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.

  • Qclearance:This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.

  • Visa Sponsorship:Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
