Sr Scientist/Distinguished Scientist

The Condensed Matter Physics and Materials Science Division has a very strong tradition of research into strongly correlated materials using several experiment techniques including x-ray scattering, neutron scattering, and photoelectron spectroscopy, etc.

This is complemented by excellent sample synthesis capabilities and strong theoretical support. The Condensed Matter Theory Group within the Division focuses on band structure theory, tensor-network models and DMRG, analytical methods for low dimensional systems, and on other aspects of strongly correlated physics. The successful candidate will collaborate both with other members of the Theory Group and with the experimental efforts within the Division.

Position Description:

The successful candidate will join the Condensed Matter Theory (CMT) Group in the Condensed Matter Physics and Materials Science Division. The Division consists of an interdisciplinary and distinguished team of scientists devoted to the theoretical understanding, discovery, synthesis, and advanced characterization of correlated and topological quantum materials. The expertise of the selected individual is of the highest caliber where discovery and invention are at the top in their field. They are expected to maintain a good working relationship with the relevant DOE program managers as well as be responsive to the strategic directions of the Energy Sciences Directorate and BNL as a whole.

Consistently demonstrates extremely high levels of technical knowledge, ingenuity, originality, and creativity. We will be open to considering a dual appointment position with a candidate's home institution.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Aid in developing the scientific directions of the CMT program
• Advance the state-of-the art in theoretical techniques as applied to correlated and topological quantum materials
• Conduct impactful research aligned with the Division's strategic directions and will carry responsibility for research outcomes for scientists they coordinate
• Opinion and participation in research programs will have significant influence with sponsors
• Conduct synergistic research with members of both the CMT group and other scientists in the division
• Aid in overseeing the group's postdocs
• Work collegially with the leaders in the Division to fulfill its mission
• Respond to new Department of Energy funding opportunities
• Oversee reporting of CMT program effort to DOE program managers
• Serve as principal investigator or project manager on significant programs.
• Lead the development and implementation of new and/or expanded capabilities that impact the present and future direction of the Laboratory.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Recognized internationally as a resource or active contributor with significant impact in the field.
• Bachelor's and 20+ years, or Master's and 15+ years, or Doctorate and 10+ years post-PhD.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Bachelor's and 25+ years, or Master's and 20+ years, or Doctorate and 15+ year post-PhD.
• Develop and apply advanced technologies, scientific principles, theories, and concepts.
• Act independently (or direct scientists) to uncover and resolve issues associated with the development and implementation of programs.
• Participation is critical to projects. Carry responsibilities for research outcomes.
• Conceptualize, conduct, coordinate, or make significant contributions to large projects or multiple small projects.
