2nd Class Drydock Technician
Purpose:
Colonna's Shipyard is seeking a 2 nd Class Drydock Technician to support operations in Norfolk, VA.
This role will contribute to the maintenance of Company drydocks, equipment, tools, and general facilities using mechanical, welding, machinist, and/or fitting skills/knowledge. They will also be responsible for assisting with docking, undocking, and other vessel evolutions when required.
Job Description:


  • Complete the maintenance tasks of drydocks and railways successfully.
  • Repair, modify, install, and dismantle structural outfit items (i.e. doors, ladders, foundations), shipboard hulls, bulkheads, and/or decks.
  • Weld/fit using steel, stainless steel, and aluminum materials as needed.
  • Interpret and lay out blueprints; check and fit materials; tack weld small assemblies.
  • Complete prep work and use grinding.
  • Work with presses, floor shaping, forming plates, shaping from templates, marking symbols, doors, hatches and scuttles, rolls, presses, and blacksmith shop.
  • Adhere to industry codes, regulations, and specifications.
  • Install simple systems without templates or blueprints.
  • Complete riveted joint repairs.
  • Train on emergency procedures relating to drydocks, railways, and travel lift.
  • Read and understand the Chemist and Competent Person reports to determine if job sites, such as those involving combustible material, are safe for personnel and hot work.
  • Assists with blocking and hauling of vessels to include building keel/bilge blocks, cradles, and shoring.
  • Become proficient in line handling, mooring vessels, knots, basic rigging, and other docking related skills/terminology.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications:


  • Must have a total of at least three (3) years shipyard experience.
  • Must be able to work effectively and efficiently with others.
  • Must be a steady and reliable worker that maintains regular and consistent attendance.
  • Must be able to work independently to complete responsibilities.
  • Must be able to comprehend and follow complex instructions.
  • Must have 24/7 availability.
  • Must be able to follow instructions.


Desired Qualifications:


  • Ability to perform multi-pass, all position fillet and butt welds using SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding), GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding), Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), and FCAW (Flux Cored Arc Welding) preferred.
  • Ability to read/comprehend blueprints, weld sequence sketches, templates, weld symbols, and shipfitting symbols preferred.
  • Mechanical or outside machinist background preferred.
  • Structural background preferred.
  • Knowledge of drydocking procedures preferred.


Travel Requirements:


  • Minimal Travel; 10% or less.


Physical Requirements:


  • Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 20 lbs.
  • Must be physically agile to perform tasks in naval ships. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces, including enter and moving through manholes.
  • May ride ships at sea for extended periods
  • Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
  • Frequent exposure to noise due to machinery and equipment.
  • Employee is required to operate trucks, forklifts & man-lifts.
  • While performing the duties of this job, you may frequently be required to stand, walk & sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear. Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, squat, kneel, twist and crawl.
  • Work in extreme temperatures and conditions. At times you will work in areas that have less adequate ventilation
  • Frequent use of respirator.
  • Protective clothing or equipment and face shields or goggles shall be worn when welding, cutting, or working with molten metal.
