Advanced Practice Provider (PA/NP) Vascular Surgery

Position Description:

The Medical College of Wisconsin's Department of Surgery, Division of Vascular Surgery is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to provide primary or specialty medical care within defined scope of practice under the supervision of a licensed physician and in accordance with MCW/FMLH/CHW policies and procedures. The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) works as part of a multidisciplinary health care team, providing a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic services for the patients of the inpatient services as a member of the Department of Surgery- Division of Vascular Surgery.

The APP will have a strong foundation in evidence-based practice and ensure an environment of safe quality care. This is located in Milwaukee, WI at Froedtert Hospital.

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) works as a member of a multidisciplinary health care team who will contribute to excellence in program administration, patient care, patient safety, research, quality improvement, and teaching.

In this role you will be responsible for the following:

• Collaborates with interdisciplinary health care teams in diagnosis and treatment vascular surgery patients in a primarily inpatient environment, with some outpatient work as well.
• Writes accurate and timely progress notes, procedure notes, and/or admission and transfer orders.
• Order, perform, and interpret screening and diagnostic procedures and tests, and appropriately communicates and documents information.
• Privileged to perform procedures beyond core as identified by the vascular surgery services, such as, but not exclusive to, wound and drain management.
• Facilitates and communicates with patient, family and staff to promote continuity of care across the continuum of care.
• Attend required training and meets key regulatory requirements, including those of the privileging institution, CMS, and the Joint Commission.
• Evaluates quality outcomes for the patients receiving care of this team through participation in the development of quality indicators and outcomes dashboard.
• Acquires information on the most current development and trends in the Physician Assistant field and/or Nurse Practitioner field, through educational programs, in-services, professional associates, and current literature.
• Develops an expertise in the coordination and delivery of care to patients on the vascular surgery service.
• Collaborates with cross-department specialty care teams as well as primary care providers in consultative care of patients with vascular surgery needs.

Core Advanced Practice Responsibilities:

• Performs comprehensive histories and physical exams, identifies normal and abnormal findings, including physical, cognitive and psychosocial status.
• Orders and interprets laboratory and diagnostic tests.
• Develops pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment plans.
• Monitors effectiveness of plan of care.
• Educates patients on disease and treatment plans.
• Performs procedures as trained and appropriately credentialed.
• Documents within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and completes other necessary documents.
• Collaborates and/or consults with physicians and other health care providers as appropriate.
• Educates, counsels, and assists patients and families regarding current health problems, health maintenance activities and preventive behaviors.

Preferred Schedule: This is a full-time day position working 4 Ten-hour shifts weekdays with 1 to 2 weekend (Saturday & Sunday) shifts per month required. On scheduled weekends two weekday shifts will be days off. Holiday coverage required on rotation basis. Scheduling flexibility required to provide for an appropriate level of patient care coverage. May require alternative schedules and/or coverage at alternative care sites in the future based on evolving business needs.

Advanced Practice Nurse: Master's Degree or higher in Nursing
Physician Assistant: Bachelor's Degree or higher in Physician Assistant Studies
