Job Title: Staff Accountant

About Our Client:
Our clientis a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering underserved communities through education, healthcare, and economic development programs. They are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Staff Accountant to join their finance team. This is a key role that will support financial operations and ensure the integrity and accuracy of financial reporting, contributing to the success of their mission.

Position Summary:
The Staff Accountant will be responsible for a variety of accounting functions, including general ledger maintenance, financial reporting, account reconciliations, and assisting with budgeting and auditing processes. This position requires a strong understanding of accounting principles, excellent problem-solving skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced nonprofit environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts, ensuring all transactions are accurately recorded.
  • Prepare and process journal entries, including adjusting and accrual entries.
  • Assist with month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting.
  • Prepare financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow reports.
  • Assist with the preparation and monitoring of the annual budget, ensuring alignment with the organization's goals and funding.
  • Perform bank reconciliations and ensure all transactions are properly recorded in the accounting system.
  • Support the preparation of internal and external financial reports, ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting standards.
  • Monitor and track grant and donation funds, ensuring funds are used according to donor and grantor specifications.
  • Assist with audits by providing documentation and responding to audit requests.
  • Review and analyze financial data to identify discrepancies, irregularities, or areas for improvement.
  • Provide support for accounts payable and accounts receivable functions as needed.
  • Assist with the preparation of tax filings and ensure compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Participate in process improvements to streamline financial operations and enhance efficiency.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (required).
  • Minimum of 2 years of accounting experience; nonprofit accounting experience is a plus.
  • Knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting, and internal controls.
  • Proficiency with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage, or other nonprofit accounting software) is preferred.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills, including the ability to work with complex formulas and data analysis.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent organizational, analytical, and time-management skills.
  • Ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-financial staff and stakeholders.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with integrity and professionalism.
  • Knowledge of nonprofit accounting standards (FASB, GAAP) is a plus.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

Determining compensation for this role (and others) at Vaco depends upon a wide array of factors including but not limited to:

  • the individual's skill sets, experience and training;
  • licensure and certification requirements;
  • office location and other geographic considerations;
  • other business and organizational needs.

With that said, as required by local law, Vaco believes that the following salary range referenced above reasonably estimates the base compensation for an individual hired into this position in geographies that require salary range disclosure. The individual may also be eligible for discretionary bonuses.
