Summary: Under the direction of the RN circulator as dictated by the standards in the Medicare Conditions of Participation for surgical services assists surgical teams during operative procedures in scrubbing for all physicians in assigned services. Arranges and inventories sterile set up for operations. Assists in preparing moving and positioning patients. Performs sterile scrub procedures and related activities such as preparation and draping the patient and operative area. Passes instruments sutures sponges and supplies in accordance with hospital policy and procedure. Participates in the turnover of operating rooms. Responsibilities: Prepares the Operating Room for cases. Selects and checks case carts and preference cards for correct instrument pan(s) packs sterile supplies and additional items needed for the case. Anticipates need for special equipment and supplies before procedure and requests it from the circulating nurse. Sets up back table and Mayo tray with instruments and supplies according to the procedure and surgeon preference card. Performs surgical count with circulating nurse according to Brown University Health surgical count policy. Responsible for maintaining strict aseptic techniques in the operating room area reporting and correcting any *breaks* in such techniques. Has the ability to scrub on all types of surgical procedures and passes in instruments. Responds to needs of surgeon and other team members. Assists operative team and anticipates needs of the surgeon and/or assistants during cases including the need for special equipment and supplies. Remains constantly observant of the operative field recognizing emergency situations and performs emergency procedures as directed. Utilizes a variety of OR equipment such as microscopes CUSA steam sterilizers suction compressed air/gas etc. Passes and tracks instruments sutures and supplies during procedures. Labels all medication and solutions on sterile field. Monitors sponges needles and instruments throughout the case. Cares for specimens to prevent loss or damage. Uses caution when handling specimens to ensure proper anatomical identification as communicated by the surgeon. Verification of specimens and labeling in conjunction with the circulating RN and proper handoff of specimens to pathology and clinical labs. Assists in completing procedures. Participates in closing counts at appropriate times sponge and needle count at change of shift according to the count policy. Assists in the application of dressing and/or cast. Assists with when feasible transferring patient from OR table to stretcher/bed when appropriate. Prepares operating room and supplies for subsequent cases. Communicates with others to facilitate the timely turnover of operating rooms. Assures all sharps from back table are disposed of properly in biohazard sharps receptable. Turns over back table and gathers appropriate supplies and equipment for subsequent cases. Removes unused supplies from the surgery cart and stores them in the appropriate area for use. Participates in the maintenance and rotation of stock for the department. Stocks surgical supplies in the operating rooms and storage areas and performs other duties as assigned. Participates in maintaining cleanliness of the department. Removes soiled linen and supplies from the operating room after surgical procedures and assists in the general cleaning of the area. Obtains clean linen and supplies and sets up room for next procedure. Serves as a preceptor to new staff in specified clinical area. Mentors* students/and or staff as requested. Complies with established departmental policies procedures and objectives. Demonstrates use of quality improvement in daily operations. Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements. Respects diverse views and approaches and contributes in maintaining an environment of professionalism tolerance civility and acceptance toward all employees patients and visitors. Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed. Other information: QUALIFICATIONS: Associates degree from a 2-year accredited surgical technologist program required or completion from an accredited school of surgical technology and having obtained the required surgical technologist certification by the date of hire. Military experience as a Surgical Technologist will be strongly considered. Knowledge of various surgical equipment and aseptic techniques; ability to operate sterilization equipment. Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process. BLS required upon hire. EXPERIENCE: Nine to twelve months experience with increasing responsibility preferred in order to be familiar with all surgical procedures performed. WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Required to work in a sterile environment and regularly exposed to cuts and punctures from surgical instruments and equipment burns from autoclaves anesthesia gases as well as odors and communicable diseases from patients. Physical ability to assist in lifting and positioning of patients and to stand for extended periods of time during surgical procedures. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None.
