Summary:

The Board-Certified Clinical Specialist reports directly to the Clinical Manager and/ or Assistant Clinical Manager (ACM) of their respective department. The Clinical Specialist will provide evidence-based oversight of program/ service specific clinical protocols and initiatives will demonstrate advanced evaluative and treatment skills and will provide mentorship in the area of identified clinical expertise.
The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) is committed to the promotion of the highest possible level of care. The position of Clinical Specialist is distinguished by formal recognition of advanced clinical skills and ongoing professional development assessed by a recognized organization. Consideration is given for other professional organization that meet the application certification and re-certification requirements.

Responsibilities:

The Board-Certified Clinical Specialist is expected to perform the duties and responsibilities as outlined in the staff level physical therapist and senior physical therapist job descriptions.
Additional Responsibilities
* Use comprehensive and innovative treatment approaches to maximize patient/caregiver outcomes
* Provide ongoing mentorship to senior and staff therapists
* Provide formal advanced training education and learning opportunities to staff
* Provide education to interdisciplinary staff on case by case basis to optimize integrated patient plans of care
Program/Service Specific Operational Support
As determined by the ACM and/or Clinical Manager the Clinical Specialist will enrich the quality of clinical services as well as the operational performance of their specific clinical area.
* Identify system needs and coordinate improvement process
* Lead interdisciplinary teams and/or committees in area of expertise to impact Brown University Health wide outcomes and quality measures
* Coordinate research outcome measurement and administers program competencies
* Role model stewardship of resources to support quality initiatives
* Coordinate research initiative(s)
Quality Improvement
The Clinical Specialist will develop and maintain quality improvement processes to ensure patient safety quality of patient care and satisfaction in addition to other measures.
* Performs case study review by collecting and analyzing patient outcomes to ensure optimal practice
* Develops and maintains clinical reference and resources for staff and student use
* Coordinates and leads expert review and application of new evidence into current practice
* Coordinate quality initiative(s)

Other information:

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:
Bachelor*s degree in Physical Therapy from an accredited institution is required. Master*s or Doctorate level degree in Physical Therapy is preferred.
State license issued by the Rhode Island Department of Health is required. Holds a board certification from an accrediting body that regularly reviews and attests that certification standards are met.
Must demonstrate via portfolio advanced competency beyond the senior physical therapist. This will include: resume continuing education courses/CEUs presentations/educational activities publications research program development and awards/recognition.
EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of five years clinical experience as a licensed physical therapist with advanced clinical academic and professional currency in the physical therapy field to include specialty board certification.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be fit for duty as documented by OSHA standard and program specific needs.
INDEPENDENT ACTION:
Remain current in literature national practices and state of the art equipment and/or proactive techniques and current healthcare regulations within specialty area
Participate in presentations/activities within Brown University Health and/ or the community
Participate in organizational networking and communication
Seek resources within the healthcare community to provide staff with additional learning opportunities
Identify and presents ideas for research
Maintain current membership in a professional organization and/or specialty area
Represent Brown University Health at National State and/or Local committees related to profession and/or specialty area
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
No direct supervision. However pursuant to the state of Rhode Island Rules and Regulations for Licensing Physical Therapists a licensed physical therapist shall at all times be responsible for the supervision of physical therapist assistants supportive personnel and students to ensure the safety and welfare of patients. Provides consistent and thorough clinical supervision of assistants aides therapists and volunteers including cosigning notes reviewing patient treatment plans and goals.
