Position Highlights

The Harris Lab at the University of Arizona, College of Medicine - Tucson is looking for a highly motivated individual to work as a full-time Research Professional II. The Research Professional II will support molecular, cellular, and whole animal research, investigate cardiac and skeletal muscle via planning, organization, and execution of common molecular biology techniques and specialized functional assays. The incumbent will design protocols, collect and interpret data, and serve as lab manager in order to coordinate lab activity and maintain safety and organizational standards.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Serve as lab manager. Recruit, supervise and train
    undergraduate students; assign and review work. Manage chemical
    inventories, compliance records, and SOPs. Provide orientation to new
    laboratory members. Order supplies and oversee supply inventory. Serve as
    chemical safety coordinator. Coordinate equipment service and repair with
    manufacturers.
  • Manage multiple transgenic and CRISPR gene-edited mouse
    lines. Coordinate breeding, weaning, and other animal husbandry
    activities. Supervise and review student genotyping of mice via PCR.
    Coordinate and allocate tissue harvest for a variety of projects. Maintain
    detailed animal databases. Serve as IACUC protocol contact and contribute
    to IACUC protocol amendments and reviews.
  • Conduct research and disseminate findings in
    scientifically coherent manner. Develop hypotheses, perform
    experiments, generate and analyze data, report results. For example,
    run enzyme assays; perform bacterial protein expression, protein chromatography
    (affinity, ion exchange and size exclusion), protein and DNA
    electrophoresis, immunoblotting, ELISA, immunohistochemistry, DNA cloning.
    Perform biomechanical and structural measurements on muscle tissues. Use or adapt computer programs to present or analyze research findings
    including video analysis or statistical analysis, X-Ry.
  • Contribute to new grant funding proposals. Co-author
    manuscripts for publication in high impact journals. Participate in or
    present research findings at conferences or other scientific meetings.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong organizational skills, such as record keeping
    and data management.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in biology, physiology, biochemistry,
    molecular biology, or a related field.
  • Three (3) years of relevant work experience, or
    equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in biology, physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, or a related field.
  • Experience with mouse and/or rat husbandry.
  • Experience with animal research and/or managing animal colonies.
  • Experience with molecular biology work such as PCR, plasmid and protein purification, immunoblot and/or immunohistochemistry.
