Position Highlights

The department of Entomology seeks to fill the role of Research Technician I. This position is a great learning opportunity as it will work in the new Medical Entomology Lab. Dr. Paulina Maldonado is looking for the successful candidate to assist in the initial lab setup of equipment and materials to get the lab up and running, in addition to conducting exciting experiments related to tick research. The successful candidate will be expected to design and conduct experiments involving ticks, assist with lab orders and lab equipment setup. Specific tasks and experiments include tick handling and tick dissection, basic microbiology (bacterial cultures), protein and DNA extractions, PCR, ELISA, Western Blot and tick-colony maintenance using blood in an artificial feeding system.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Design and perform experiments involving basic microbial and molecular techniques, such as DNA, RNA and protein extractions, PCR, qPCR, ELISA, Western Blot and other types of immunoassay.
  • Tick feeding, maintenance and dissections. Maintaining tick colonies of different tick species. Maintain bacterial colonies and cell cultures.
  • Assist the PI in making orders of lab supplies, maintenance of lab equipment and updating lab inventory.
  • Assist PI in the training of new students. Reporting, analyzing and interpreting data.

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Enthusiasm for conducting research on ticks
  • Knowledge of microbiological techniques
  • Knowledge of statistics
  • Basic understanding of molecular biology techniques
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficient experience working in Microsoft Word, Excel and similar software
  • Experience working in a laboratory
  • B.S. in entomology, biology or related science
