Position Description
Employees in this classification provide support in an assigned research laboratory conducting specified phases of research projects. Performs work independently and is responsible for developing new procedures and techniques to be utilized in the laboratory and in experiments, and new applications for standard procedures and techniques. Work is performed under usual laboratory conditions. Some hazards may be present due to use of radioactive, carcinogenic or other potentially harmful substances. Responsibilities also include ensuring overall cleanliness of the laboratory and laboratory equipment, and ordering and maintaining an adequate stock of necessary supplies. May instruct or direct work of subordinate laboratory personnel.

Major/Essential Functions
  • Assist P.I. in maintaining a supportive and collegial working environment.
  • Actively promotes the desired environment in the laboratory and department.
  • Maintains appropriate documentation related to all experiments (lab notebook), protocols, equipment, safety requirements, inventory, and orders.
  • Up-to-date complete documentation in accordance to standard laboratory practice and TTUHSC rules and regulations.
  • Ensures overall cleanliness and organization of the laboratory and laboratory equipment.
  • Laboratory is clean and organized on a day-to-day basis.
  • Orders and maintains adequate stocks of all necessary supplies and consumables, with PI's approval.
  • Stock laboratory with necessary supplies and consumables to ensure its uninterrupted functioning.
  • Order supplies at appropriate times and in adequate quantities to avoid waste.
  • Verifies the good working order of all essential laboratory equipment on a daily basis, and takes immediate measures when malfunctions are noted.
  • Ensures working condition of all essential laboratory equipment, including freezers, fridges, incubators, gas cylinders, liquid nitrogen storage, and others as designated by the PI. Works to promptly safeguard research resources (cells, samples, and other perishables) in case of malfunction.
  • Takes appropriate measures to remediate malfunctions, working with the department's equipment technician.
  • Plans and designs and conducts laboratory experiments.
  • Summarizes data and assists PI in data analysis
  • Supervise and aid other research personnel and students in the laboratory.


Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in one of the sciences, or equivalent combination (4 years) of job-related experience and college education. Experience may be substituted for college education on a year for year basis.
