Position Highlights

Arizona Space Institute (UASI) is in search of a Laboratory Coordinator to oversee and manage the day-to-day operations of its labs within the Grand Challenges Research Building, Applied Research Building, and Mission Integration Laboratory. The Laboratory Coordinator will ensure smooth facility operations, maintain equipment, manage inventory, and support research teams while ensuring compliance with safety regulations and institutional policies. This role is essential in providing a well-organized, safe, and efficient lab environment to support cutting-edge research and projects.

Duties & Responsibilities

Duties & responsibilities:

  • Oversee the daily operations of laboratories, ensuring that all facilities are properly maintained, organized, and functioning efficiently to support research activities.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations, institutional policies, and industry standards related to laboratory work.
  • Collaborate with Principal Investigators (PIs) and researchers to manage and maintain laboratory equipment, ensuring proper calibration, timely repairs, and replacement as needed to support ongoing research.
  • Monitor and enforce laboratory safety protocols, including waste disposal, chemical handling, and emergency response procedures.
  • Coordinate the receiving and delivery of all packages, ensuring that items are efficiently processed, accurately documented, and promptly distributed to the appropriate lab or department.
  • Collaborate with research teams to facilitate smooth workflow and resolve any operational issues.
  • Facilitate training and orientation for new staff and researchers on laboratory facilities, equipment, and safety protocols to ensure proper usage and adherence to operational standards.
  • Serve as the point of contact for any facility-related issues, including repairs, maintenance requests, and improvements.
  • Liaise with facility management teams to schedule and coordinate any building maintenance, renovations, or upgrades.
  • Monitor and manage building systems (e.g., HVAC, lighting, utilities) to ensure they operate optimally without disrupting laboratory activities, addressing any issues promptly to maintain a stable and conducive research environment.
  • Additional duties may be assigned.

Knowledge, skills & abilities:

  • Comprehensive understanding of laboratory operations, procedures, and equipment maintenance.
  • Organizational skills: Effectively coordinate lab activities, schedules, and resources.
  • Communication skills: Collaborate with researchers, PIs, vendors, and facility staff with clarity and professionalism.
  • Emergency response skills: Act effectively during lab or building emergencies, such as spills or equipment failures.
  • Adaptability: Respond to evolving lab and research needs in a dynamic environment.
  • Attention to detail: Ensure that lab operations, safety, and compliance requirements are met without oversight.
  • Knowledge of export control regulations, including ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations), EAR (Export Administration Regulations), and CUI (Controlled Unclassified Information).
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required and a minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Federal regulations require that the incumbent be a U.S. citizen, legal permanent resident, or have another protected status under 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3) to be ITAR/EAR compliant."
