Job Title: Youth Program Specialist

FLSA Status: Full Time - exempt
Reports to: Divisional Youth & Candidates' Secretary

Supervises: N/A

Rate of Pay: $56,638.40 Annually

Closing Date: 1/25/2024

Scope of Position/Essential Functions:

The Youth Programs Specialist must communicate and model The Salvation Army's mission, doctrine, teachings, and principles to both groups and individuals in order to enhance and promote Christian education within The Salvation Army Intermountain Division in relation to youth programing.

Works in an office environment with frequent interruptions, multiple deadlines, and competing priorities. Work environment includes managing projects with conflicting requirements and tight deadlines. The following equipment may be used: telephone, computer equipment, typewriter, electronic recorder, personal computer with screen monitor, fax/copy machine, microphones, audio-visual equipment, 10-key calculator. This position also requires relocation to High Peak Camp each summer.

Education and Work Experience:

Bachelor's Degree in Christian Education or a related field and/or a minimum of three years' experience in Salvation Army youth programs in positions of leadership and supervision.

General Responsibilities:



  1. Responsible for the coordination of youth and young adult related programs to administration, Officers, Territorial Headquarters, and all corps, service extension units, and service centers in the Intermountain Division.
  2. Responsible for maintaining a consistent process of program support to divisional youth programs.
  3. Draft, process, and maintain ongoing correspondence, reports, and other necessary documents as they relate to the Youth Programs and support to DYCS and DYS.


Responsibilities:



  1. Provide direction, creative support, and coordination for:


    1. Corps Cadets, with responsibilities as the Divisional Corps Cadet Counselor
    2. Troops, with responsibilities for all youth character building programs (Girl Guard, Sunbeam, Moonbeam, and Adventure Corps)
    3. Sunday School curriculum and development (assist with DYCS)
    4. Bible Bowl
    5. Junior Soldiers (assist with DYS)
    6. Vacation Bible School curriculum (resource and support)
    7. Youth Resources


  2. Youth Leaders:


    1. Develop and implement youth leader's network
    2. Plan and prepare youth leader retreats
    3. In conjunction with the DYCS and DYS with youth leadership training


  3. Young Adult Fellowships:


    1. Coordinate Front Range (Denver Metro) meetings and occasional meetings outside the Front Range
    2. Plan and implement Young Adult Socials and Retreat
    3. Develop self-sustaining programs within the given regions
    4. Build regional contact between the youth of neighboring corps




  1. Divisional Youth Retreat:

    1. Brainstorm with the DYCS and DYS to create initial outline and program.
    2. Plan and coordinate all registration, meetings, entertainment, workshops, and events throughout the weekend with the DYCS and DYS.
    3. Prepare a Leader's Brief and make sure all leaders are ready to execute their responsibilities for the weekend.
    4. Create/Coordinate all promotional material and posters.
    5. Prepare all final reports for DHQ & THQ.


  2. Create a quarterly divisional youth newsletter and promotional materials/graphic arts for divisional youth events (such as Young Adult Retreat, Divisional Youth Retreat, Rallies, Divisional Events, Chapels, etc.).
  3. Summer Camp Planning

    1. Work with DYCS and Camp Director to identify and hire entire summer camp staff. Present a timetable for achieving this outcome.
    2. Responsible for the development of Summer Camp applications and registration & coordination of youth for all Summer Camps.
    3. Plan and prepare the 10-week detailed summer camp program and schedule with input from Camp Director and DYCS.
    4. Plan and prepare summer camp orientation at High Peak Camp with input from Camp Director and DYCS.
    5. Attend Career and Employment days around the United States at various college and universities (minimum 2).
    6. Work with the Corps Officers, Envoys, and Service Extension Directors/Units to ensure that we have 90% occupancy at all summer camps.
    7. Write and update detailed job descriptions for all summer camp positions with input from Camp Director and DYCS.
    8. Prepare paperwork for CFC approval for all camp hires and volunteers.
    9. Assist to plan and implement all summer programs at High Peak Camp.
    10. Assist with SALT program planning and coordinate to create a schedule with participating Corps.




Miscellaneous:



  1. Responsible for coordinating department services, records control workflow improvements and reporting procedures.
  2. Responsible for department operating practices, such as department calendar, report preparation, follow-through of special department programs and events, record keeping systems, forms control, office layout, suggestion systems, personnel and budgetary requirements, and performance standards to create new systems or revise established procedures.
  3. Compiles, prepares, stores and retrieves correspondence, filing, notes, minutes and/or reports.
  4. Responsible in preparation of budget needs and annual reports of organization.
  5. Review programs and finances to recommend changes, revisions, and deletions for the sake of constantly improving the youth department services.
  6. Other duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:



  • Knowledge of The Salvation Army mission, philosophy, culture, protocol and organizational structure.
  • Good working knowledge of The Salvation Army, and particularly a thorough understanding of Salvation Army scouting programs.
  • Salvation Army Soldiership required.
  • Ability to teach and train leaders
  • Must have ability to work well independently in a detailed, professional and courteous manner.
  • Personal relationship and commitment to Jesus Christ and the ability to share the Gospel.
  • Experience in leading people and the ability to work well with staff, the public and the children we serve.
  • Experience hiring, supervising, and supporting staff and volunteers.
  • Ability to make scheduling assignments and order supplies and equipment.
  • Must be 21 years or older.
  • Must possess a valid CO driver's license.



Software-related skills: Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite (Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Word and Lotus Notes) - with particular skill in Graphics such as desktop publishing and web design ability. Experience and skill with Media Shout and Adobe Creative Suite. Significant program, media, and marketing tools and planning skills required.

Physical Requirements: Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist on intermittent or continuous basis. Ability to grasp, push, pull, and reach overhead. Ability to operate telephone. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds, Ability to access and produce information from a computer, Ability to understand written information.
