Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
Building Services provide full maintenance and repair services for all
UNC facilities and ensure the proper operation of those facilities in support of the
UNC mission of teaching, research and public service. Building Services supports more than 400 campus buildings with approximately 18 million gross square feet of space. The teams that provide quality maintenance, repair and construction services that support the teaching, research, and public service mission of the University include Campus Maintenance,
EMCS, Facilities Operations Support, Housing Support,
HVAC Systems, and Life Safety Services. Campus Maintenance operates, maintains and improves the physical environment of the University through a complete line of shop services that include carpentry, electrical, plumbing, masonry, insulation, preventive maintenance and special laboratory equipment repair. |
Position Summary |
A SIGN-ON BONUS OF $4,081 IS AVAILABLE FOR THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT OF THIS POSITION PAID IN 2 INSTALLMENTS WITHIN 12 MONTHS OF HIRE: $2,040.50 WITHIN 30 DAYS OF HIRE DATE & $2,040.50 12 MONTHS AFTER HIRE DATE.
This position is responsible for completing carpentry, mold remediation, painting, and electrical work, including but not limited to the proper and safe use and operation of the associated powered or hand tools of the trade, general maintenance, repair, replacement, fabrication, installation, and alteration. Performs general carpentry, minor electrical on classroom fixtures, such as setting limit switches on motorized shades, aisle lighting troubleshooting and other needs (PM or otherwise) and has responsibility for doing a great deal of planning to ensure minimal impact on students, faculty and staff while performing duties and responsibilities in classrooms.
Position also provides focused support for Bio-Safety Level (
BSL) 2+ and 3 labs.
Position is responsible for other building maintenance within the Carpentry Shop in Building Services for the repair of existing classroom seating (fixed and movable), handrails, stair repairs, classroom fixtures & brackets, bathroom fixtures, exterior bollards, and the fabrication of necessary components, as they are able.
Position will document water intrusion and emergency response events as they occur, tracking all remediation equipment deployed, duration of placement and confirmation of return to shop upon completion of use. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Ability to read and interpret construction blueprints and detailed job descriptions, create a materials take-off list and complete purchase requisitions for needed materials, complete purchase requisitions for other purchases (i.e., tools and tool accessories as necessary), and ability to apply skills in planning, problem-solving, attention to detail, teamwork, communication, and adherence to safety. Also requires skills and knowledge necessary to use and operate the associated powered or hand tools of the trade properly and safely.
Valid North Carolina driver's license or ability to obtain one prior to start date.
Ability to serve as a mandatory employee and report to work in support of essential (mandatory) University operations, even when adverse weather or other emergency conditions, including but not limited to a public health emergency, may require the University to close.
A baseline blood draw, a physical and inoculations are required to provide Bio-Safety Level (
BSL) 2+ and 3 labs support. Entry into hot labs with an Environment, Health & Safety escort is also required, which necessitates wearing respiratory protection, as well as annual medical certification, fit testing, and training. Rotational emergency call back duty directly supporting
BSL 2+/3 is required. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Progressive experience in carpentry, familiarity with working in a University setting, and knowledge of
UNC campus buildings. Capable of performing electrical repairs and mold remediation. |

Ability to work on hands and knees for extended periods of time; move objects weighing at least 50 lbs. or more with or without reasonable accommodation; climb and work from ladders, boom lifts and scaffolding up to 60 ft.; and ability to wear required
PPE (personal protective equipment) for the specific job, including but not limited to safety harnesses, fall protection, respirators, face masks or face shields, and protective gloves and safety shoes. |

**ELIGIBILITY FOR SIGN-ON BONUS
The selected candidate for this position may be eligible for a sign-on bonus. Qualified applicants must apply and be selected from the candidate pool of this posting and meet the State policy following requirements:
To be eligible for a Sign-on bonus, an individual must not have worked in a probationary, permanent, or time-limited appointment in the last 12 months as an employee in North Carolina state government, including but not limited to the judicial system, state executive branch agencies, and the university system in a position subject to the State Human Resources Act.
A newly hired permanent full time or permanent part-time (more than 20 hours a week) employee are eligible for a sign-on bonus (this will be prorated for employees working more than 20 hours and less than 40 hours per week).
