Job Summary

Functional areas of oversight include Preoperative Clinic, Surgery (inpatient and outpatient), Preoperative area, Post Anesthesia Recovery, Cardiology Services and Endoscopy Services across 2 campuses. Ensures the quality of Perioperative patient care and serves as a role model for professional nursing practice. Supervises staff involved in providing clinical patient care, serves as a role model for professional nursing practice. Responsible for administration and management of personnel, fiscal, and material resources on a 24-hour basis.

Designs and oversees nursing and administrative operations in large and / or multiple patient care areas. Accountable for the overall administrative planning and coordination of the staffing, fiscal and material resources. Assists with the development and implementation of new programs and policies. Direct reports are Directors and managers.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $266,324 - $290,984 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

Saint Francis Hospital Operating Room runs 5 surgical suites and/or a burn unit OR (Total OR suites is 9). The SFH performs general, orthopedic, robotic and gender affirmation procedures in the main OR and burn procedures in the burn unit OR. The Endoscopy unit operates in one lab and performs diagnostic and interventional procedures.
St. Mary's Hospital Operating Rooms runs 5 surgical suites (Total OR suites is 13). The SMH performs general, orthopedic, spine, gyn and podiatry procedures in the main OR. The Endoscopy unit operates two labs and performs diagnostic and interventional procedures.
The SMH Cardiac Cath Lab has 3 labs and runs an inpatient and outpatient cardiology department at both facilities.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
  • Registered Nurse in the State of California
  • BLS certification
  • Registered Nurse in the State of California
  • 5 years of experience with perioperative operating room patient care clinical standards and
  • care delivery, systems, external regulations and internal policies
  • Recent administrative experience in an Operating Room environment; for example, previous
  • experience as an Assistant Unit Director or Manager
  • Strong hospital management experience, with progressive and in-depth expertise in patient care services. Knowledge of hospital / clinic operations in a hospital or medical center setting; knowledge of appropriate professional standards for the department and team
  • Strong knowledge of relevant healthcare information technology and patient care workflows and processes
  • Strong knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements, as well as related legislative, accreditation, licensing and compliance environments
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to quickly analyze problems, determine appropriate level of intervention and develop and apply effective solutions
  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills to foster and promote an environment for effective communication and collaborative decision making across multiple units and disciplines
  • Excellent leadership, fiscal and operations management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with physicians, management and staff from all disciplines
  • Ability to create and maintain a goal-oriented climate of teamwork, collaboration and consistent achievement of objectives

Preferred Qualifications


  • Knowledge of Lean principles and change management
  • Master's Degree in Nursing or relevant area
  • CNOR or CSSM certification
  • NE-BC, NEA-BC
