The Human-Computer Interaction Institute (HCII) is a living laboratory where we investigate the relationship between computer technology, human activity, and society. Founded in 1993, the HCII is a place where we work to understand and create technology that harmonizes with and improves human capabilities, goals, and social environments through interdisciplinary research and education in design, computer science, and behavioral and social sciences. Join us as a Research Programmer at Carnegie Mellon's HCI Institute! Assist in research in math tutoring and learning sciences for the PLUS project, which is focused on doubling math learning for middle school students by combining human and AI tutoring. The successful candidate will be passionate about exploring new technologies, solving complex problems, and using technologies in support of our strategic commitment to deliver high-quality educational experiences that transform lives across diverse communities of students. For this role, we are seeking a highly motivated individual to join our team and contribute to groundbreaking research and product development. All candidates must work individually and as part of multi-site teams, and may also help supervise undergraduate research assistants. Drs. Ken Koedinger and Danielle Thomas will be your mentors. Candidates will also regularly interact with other project faculty, postdocs and PhDs. Core responsibilities include:
