Job Summary

This position reports directly to the Superintendent of the HVAC Control Shop in Plant Operations & Maintenance. PO&M has the primary responsibility for the operation, maintenance, service, and repair of buildings, grounds, machinery, and utility systems at the UCDHS. This position functions as a "working" skilled craft journeyman HVAC Control Technician in a lead capacity for the HVAC Control Shop for a group of employees (HVAC Control Technicians) on a project, corrective or preventative maintenance work orders. The Lead HVAC Control Technician will assign staff with regards to status of projects and delegation of HVAC Control work activities. Incumbent must be able to schedule and control the daily working arrangements. This lead must perform skilled journey level HVAC Control work in the installation, repair, operation, maintenance, and programming of building automation systems and HVAC/Refrigeration Mechanics / Central Plant Utility, responsible for repair, calibrations, corrective maintenance on all mechanical systems, refrigeration equipment and air conditioning systems.

As a lead for these employees the incumbent can perform the following duties: keeps management appraised of overall project performance (i.e., staffing or resource needs, completion dates, changes/delays in scheduling, etc.); distributes and reviews work performed on a daily basis; informal problem-solving; schedules or approves daily work schedule based on project needs; provides general input on employee's performance to higher-level manager/supervisor; and refers and provides information to a higher-level manager/supervisor regarding issues or concerns which may result in a disciplinary action on an employee assigned to their project.

As a lead for these employees the incumbent can perform the following duties: this includes, but not limited to monitor and modify control systems and associated hardware, installation, repair, operation, maintenance, and programming of building automation systems (BAS) and HVAC/Refrigeration Mechanics / Central Plant Utility, responsible for repair, calibrations, corrective maintenance on all mechanical systems, refrigeration equipment, air conditioning systems and Pneumatic Tube, and Lighting Controls. Perform preventative maintenance annually, semi annually, monthly, weekly on critical and/or life safety equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Valid CA driver's license
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in the HVAC Controls trade and related practices, tools and equipment.
  • Experience working with energy monitoring and building automation systems on a Hospital Campus.
  • Leadership experience.
  • Must possess a certificate of completion from a recognized union apprenticeship program, University apprenticeship program, accredited trade school or have the equivalent amount of experience and training comparable to a journey level craftsperson in HVAC.
  • Ability to perform all phases of HVAC Controls at Journeyman level.
  • Must have skills, knowledge and ability to perform all functions of HVAC Control trades in a Health Care Facility.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and working specifications.
  • Must have knowledge of BAS System software and hardware; proper installation, calibration and set-up procedures of BAS systems; upload/download of various system controllers; installation techniques of BAS systems and applications; configuration and modification of BAS system software and controller logic; a variety of air handling devices and mechanical systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a Health Care Facility
  • Experience with energy metering and metrics is highly desired.
  • Experience in a healthcare facility or research laboratory environment highly desired.
  • Experience in Microsoft Suite which includes Word. Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to lead staff with regards to status of projects and delegation of everyday work activities.
  • Ability to coordinate emergency response with HVAC Control Technicians.
  • Ability to show good ethical standards and practices
  • Skill and knowledge in the installation of seismic restraints/anchoring.
  • Technical knowledge of multiple trades and skill levels trade to assign jobs according to employees' abilities and hospital standards.
  • Current on hospital codes and procedures.
  • Administrative ability to keep accurate record accounts of labor time, material costs and estimates
  • Interpersonal, oral and written communication skills to interact and covey information/instructions to diverse groups of individuals.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local codes and regulations applicable to multiple-craft trades.
  • Skill to develop implement and conduct technical training and safety programs.
  • Ability to learn and observe the safety policies and guidelines set up by the department.
  • Demonstrate basic computer skills.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Speak well enough to communicate with co-workers, peers, customers, and managers.

Department Overview

The Plant Operations & Maintenance (PO&M) Department is a 24 hour, seven day a week operation responsible for the operation, repair and maintenance of buildings, systems, and grounds at the UC Davis Health System that includes 148 acres and structures that total 4 million GMSF. Plant Operations & Maintenance is one of the largest operations and maintenance support providers to clinical, administrative, research, SOM and SON departments throughout the Health System. UC Davis Health System is one of several UC campuses that have their own cogeneration, central power plants. Cogeneration (Combined Heat and Power or CHP) is the simultaneous production of electricity and heat, both of which are used throughout the Medical Center Campus and is supported by Plant Operations & Maintenance 24x7x365

Work Environment
